The Trustees of the David Laing Foundation honour the life and legacy of David Laing CBE, whose generosity, vision and faith in the potential of people continue to guide our work today.
David believed passionately in the power of community, creativity and shared heritage. He saw the extraordinary impact that small and mediumsized charities could have when given the resources to grow, flourish and serve. His wish was simple yet profound: to shine the light where it is most needed — supporting organisations whose work offers dignity, opportunity and hope.
His warmth, curiosity and unwavering commitment to enriching community life remains at the heart of every grant the Foundation awards. We are privileged to continue the mission he began, and to uphold the values he lived so fully.
Short Biography: David Laing CBE
David Laing CBE was a businessman, philanthropist and lifelong advocate for community life, culture and heritage. Born with a deep appreciation for the richness of local history and the strength of collective endeavour, he believed that thriving communities are built through creativity, compassion and shared purpose.
In 1979, David founded the David Laing Foundation, establishing a charitable legacy that would support the wellbeing, opportunity and cultural life of communities across regions close to his heart. Over four decades, he championed projects that expanded youth opportunity, preserved historic places, strengthened community spaces, enabled participation in the arts, and supported people facing hardship.
David was known for his warmth, humility and genuine interest in the stories and struggles of others. He was a friend to many charities long before he became their funder. His commitment to shining a light on organisations doing vital, often unseen, work remains the guiding principle of the Foundation today. The Trustees are committed to ensuring that they remain true to the spirit of David’s gift.
